Every pregnant mother and anxious father has a few milestones they are really looking forward to. Everyone knows the big changes that an infant goes through in the first year of life.
Here are a few of those things and when to expect them:
Your baby’s birth – When you finally go into labor and deliver your little bundle of joy, it is a momentous day. You’ll be able to hold your child and see their face for the first time.
You’ll also be able to feed them for the first time, kiss their forehead, and rock them to sleep.
Celebrate their birthday accordingly by taking the time to appreciate it; that may sound hard if you’re the mother in labor, but you’ll feel great once you hold him or her in your arms.
Your child rolls over for the first time – this is a good indication that your child is gaining strength. You can take this as a sign that they are getting close to being able to crawl and move around by themselves.
This also means you need to start paying more attention while your child is awake. It doesn’t take much for them to roll their way into trouble while your back is turned.
Your child starts crawling – this is the moment where their mobility will really start to develop and their curiosity in their surroundings will emerge.
Your baby starts babbling – Babbling is the first step to talking, so when your child starts making noises that sound like syllables of words – instead of just crying or laughing – it’s a big change. “Mamamamama” may not be a word, but it’s progress.
Your child recognizes you – having a child that lights up when they see your face brings a warm feeling to the heart of even the most cynical person.
Your baby’s first steps – This is one of the biggest changes. When your child finally takes his or her first step without holding onto you or the furniture for support, it’s a big change.
It means they are developing leg strength, balance, and the curiosity to really move around. Make sure to applaud your child when this happens so they know how proud you are of them.
Your baby’s first word – Every parent wants their child to say their name first. Mom wants to hear “mama” and dad wants to hear “dada.” No matter what your baby chooses for his or her first word, the occasion will be special.
With so many changes happening at such a rapid pace it is a good idea to document them as they occur – having a camera handy at all times is a great idea.
Once your life settles down to a more normal pace you will have these memories available to refer back to time and time again.
